GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday cautioned against neglecting development of vulnerable, backward areas while concentrating on implementing special schemes for known Naxal-infested places.
He said special schemes should be implemented in all vulnerable areas, which may later emerge as ‘breeding grounds’.
Addressing a press conference here, Mr Gogoi said, ” Special schemes that are given to Naxal-affected areas must also be given for other vulnerable areas so that these areas do not become breeding grounds later. ” These schemes could act as ‘preventive measures’ to check rise of Naxalism and other insurgent movements, he added.
Mr Gogoi said backward areas in Assam, especially those in border areas, had been identified and Deputy Commissioners will be asked to submit reports on implementing developmental schemes there.
On the present status of insurgent groups in the state, including the hardliner ULFA faction, the Chief Minister said all were ‘under control’.
” They are trying to create problems, but it is under control. We have to be vigilant at all times, ” he added. On reports of ULFA regrouping, Mr Gogoi said the outfit still enjoyed some support but people were coming out against it and helping authorities to nab them.
On reports of Maoist leader Kissenji being in the state, the Chief Minister said he was not aware of it. (UNI)
