Margao: James Moga and Victorino Fernandes scored a goal each in the first half to guide Sporting Clube de Goa to a facile 2-0 win over Chirag United Kerala in the 6th round of the I-League, played at Nehru Stadium here on Saturday.
This was Sporting’s third win.Moga, who returned after a match suspension, worked with nicety along with Victorino upfront and, after stitching a few moves, took the lead in the 19th minute before consolidating the lead in the 30th minute.
The visitors later took control over the midfield and made inroads into the rival half but could not trouble the home team defence as Keita Boubacar along with Rovan Pereira and Joyner Lourenco held fort as they nipped the rivals’ moves in the bud to deny them any success.
The second half was devoid of any action as play was confined to a midfield tussle for most part of the game.
Sporting had two early chances to swell the lead but Fernandes shot out from close after the ball came to him off a deflection from defender Issac Boakye in the 48th minute.
Ten minutes later, Moga had a glorious chance to score his second goal but was late in connecting the ball off a cross from Anthony D’Souza, which came to him via Adil Khan.
Thereafter it was mostly a midfield battle and Chirag came close to pull one back towards the end but substitute Usman Ashik’s weak shot failed to beat keeper Gerard D’Mello who dived to his left and collected the ball.
Sporting’s third win takes their tally to 12 points from six matches. (PTI)
