Shillong: In a bizarre incident the road which leads towards the Horse Shoe Building in Lower Lachumiere was totally blocked from both sides for holding of an event at the Parking Lot of Nokrek Building, leading to a huge traffic snarl and commotion for a greater part of Saturday.

The event titled Rebel Country 2011, which consisted of a stunt show by bikers and performance by a musical band, was organised by Rocksi Events.

Over enthusiastic volunteers prevented vehicles from plying through the road. Someone even put a no-entry board in the middle of the road. Many of the vehicle owners and drivers were caught by surprise when they were prevented from driving through the road. The pro-active volunteers also diverted several vehicles on their own which added to the traffic chaos.

What was even more surprising was that the volunteers even prevented the vehicle of Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh from plying through the road.

It was after a long argument that Ampareen’s vehicle was allowed to go through this road.

Several people who were caught in the traffic snarl argued the need for giving permission for holding such events on a busy road in the middle of the city.

They felt that this event could have been organised at the Polo parking lot area.

Meanwhile, the district administration seemed unsure whether they had accorded permission to the organizers to hold such an event in the heart of the city which has resulted in lot of discomfort to the general public.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Jopthiaw Lyngdoh said that he would have find out if he had issued the permission for holding the event.
