Itanagar: Lohit and East Siang districts of Arunachal Pradesh have been selected for the implementation of ”National School Safety Programme” (NSSP).

Besides these two districts, 43 other districts of 22 states and union territories of the country had also been identified by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

National School Safety Programme is a demonstration project to promote culture of safety in schools.

With a total cost of Rs 48.47 crore, the 100 per cent Centrally-sponsored scheme has concentrated on the districts and states falling under seismic zone IV & V.

The scheme was being implemented by NDMA in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Resource Development and in partnership with states and union territories within a time frame of 24 months, official sources said here on Monday.

In order to usher in an era of safe school education for the children of the nation in the backdrop of various catastrophes claiming lives of thousands of school children in the form of flood, tsunami, earthquake etc in the recent years, the NSSP had been designed as a demonstration project to be implemented in 8600 schools in the country.

The programme with an eye to promoting a culture of disaster preparedness in the schools, would sensitise children and the school community on disaster preparedness and safety measures.
