SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said his Government would notify the setting up of a special court in the State to deal with crimes against women and children.
Dr Sangma was speaking at an aside after the function organized by the Rotary Club in the city on Tuesday. The theme of the conference was, ‘Eliminating the rising tide of crime against women and children in North East- Police pro-activism and legal remedies.’
Referring to his late mother who passed away in 2006 Dr Sangma said, “My mother was an activist who took up cases of cruelty against poor and destitute women especially during the liberation of Bangladesh. In my growing up years I have seen how she was harassed by the police and by people who filed counter cases against her.”
The Chief Minister who was visibly sensitive to the issue of crime against women and children later sat through the presentation made by Dr PM Nair a Delhi-based police officer who has spent a considerable part of his career with the UN addressing the issues of crime against women and children.
