GUWAHATI: The leaders of Karbi militant outfit ‘United People’s Democratic Solidarity’ (UPDS), who arrived here on Sunday after signing a peace accord with the Centre in New Delhi, urged the govt to be sincere in execution of the pact for real peace and development in Karbi Anglong hills district of Assam.

A huge crowd from Karbi Anglong lined up in front of the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport here since morning to welcome the UPDS and other delegates who had visited New Delhi for the accord signing. Talking to reporters at the airport, the UPDS leaders thanked people for their support and well-wishes, which led to the successful peace deal between the militant outfit and the government.

”We are hopeful that peace and development will be ensured in Karbi Anglong now, but it will depend on the sincerity of the government,” they said.

”The government must now take steps to realise the assurances made in the peace accord,” the UPDS leaders added. The UPDS had on November 25 signed the peace accord with the Central and Assam governments in the national capital.

The pact paved the way for the formation of ‘Karbi Anglong Autonomous Territorial Council’, with direct Central funding and special economic package, among others, for speedy development of the hills district. The outfit will soon float a political outfit to achieve their goal of development for Karbi Anglong. (UNI)
