16 crude bombs unearthed
KANNUR (KERALA): Sixteen country-made bombs were found hidden near a house at Central Poilur, about 40 km from here, on Monday, police said. The bombs were recovered during a raid following a tip-off, they said. No arrest has been made so far, they said, adding that the bombs were later defused. (PTI)
7 killed, 25 injured in accident
BIKANER (RAJASTHAN): Seven persons were killed and 25 seriously injured when a bus collided head on with a truck in the district on Monday. The private bus was on its way to Jaisalmer from here when the accident occurred near Nal airport on Bikaner-Jaisalmer highway. The victims were rushed to PBM government hospital where six persons, including a girl, were declared brought dead while one died during treatment, Gangashahar SHO Ranjit Singh said. The injured are stated to be in critical condition. (PTI)
Train engine catches fire
HOOGHLY (WEST BENGAL): The engine of a Howrah-bound train on Monday caught fire as it entered Adishaptagram station in West Bengal’s Hooghly district but no harm was caused to passengers. “The Malda-Howrah Intercity Express developed technical problems when it reached Mogra station and flames were seen coming out from the engine on its arrival at Adishaptagram station at about 12.25 PM,” Eastern Railway CPRO, Samir Goswami said. The fire was put out immediately by fire brigade and railway staff, he said, adding that all the passengers were safe. Another engine took the train to Howrah station, while the damaged one was towed away, Goswami said. (PTI)
8 injured in clash
ALWAR (RAJASTHAN): Eight persons were on Monday injured in a clash between members of two communities over an eveteasing incident in Deevli village here. Family members of a girl had a heated argument with members of another community when the girl was allegedly teased by some youths, police said. Soon, members of both the sides armed with sticks clashed with each other leaving eight persons injured, a senior police official said. Six persons have been detained and the matter is under investigation, he added. (PTI)
6 robbers arrested
SRINAGAR (KASHMIR): With the arrest of six persons, the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday claimed to have busted a gang of robbers in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district. The gang members were arrested during police raids on a complaint about robbery in Damhal Hanjipora area of the district last week, police said. The accused had barged into a house on November 22 and demanded Rs two lakh from the house owner. (PTI)
Nursing students fall sick
COIMBATORE (TN): Twenty-four nursing students were admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital when they fell sick after allegedly consuming contaminated water in their hostel, official sources said on Monday. While 11 students, hospitalised last night, were discharged, 13 are still undergoing treatment, District Collector M Karunagaran told reporters. Sewage water leaking into the drinking water tank may be the reason for the contamination, he said, adding that water samples have been sent for tests. Action would be taken after receipt of the report. Considering the situation, a holiday has been declared for first and third year students, he said. The second year students appeared for their practical exams on Monday, the Collector, who visited the students at the hospital, said. The students of the School of Nursing at the hospital were reporting sick for the last four days and it came to authorities’ notice last night, when 20 students, staying in the hostel on CMCH premises, got themselves admitted, he said. 7 kgs of opium seized
AMRITSAR (PUNJAB): Police on Monday seized seven kgs of opium and arrested one person in this connection. The man with the consignment of opium was moving in a stolen car when the police nabbed him at the main entry point of the Amritsar city, officials said. The seized opium was smuggled from Rajasthan, they said adding the arrested person belonged to Gurdaspur district. (PTI)
4 injured in accident
NEW DELHI: Four persons reportedly in inebriated condition were injured when their car ran into a stationary truck in north Delhi, police said on Monday. The incident took place at Gulabi Bagh last night. The victims were returning to their homes in Rohini after attending a marriage function. All of them were under the influence of alcohol, police said. The injured were identified as Jitender (35), Pankaj (35), Sunil (36) and Raj Kumar (45). Jitender and Raj Kumar are stated to be in a critical condition. (PTI)
