SHILLONG: A Support Centre with a three-prong approach— health care, counseling and vocational training focusing on women who are victims of various crimes was inaugurated by the Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Health and Family Welfare, Rowell Lyngdoh at Shillong Civil Hospital here on Monday.

This centre which is a joint initiative of the Health and Family Welfare Department and the North East Network, Meghalaya will address various women issues such as crime against women, molestation, and sexual harassment besides others.

Addressing the gathering, Health Minister, Rowell Lyngdoh blamed the rapid growth of population and development as the main reason behind the sudden rise in crime against women.

“Meghalaya, being matrilineal in nature, the women folks used to be highly respected but now they are subjected to various crimes”, Lyngdoh said

Meanwhile, the Health Minister lauded the efforts of the NEN saying that with the help of such NGOs and their awareness campaigns, women and children who are victims of such crimes will have the courage to approach them.“Continuous efforts on the part of NGOs has enlightened the people especially the poor people to fight for their rights and get justice,” he added.
