Editor,
It has been reported off an on through the print and electronic media the continuous traffic jam starting right from Byrnihat up to places like Khliehriat in Jaintia Hills district on account of heavily loaded and unloaded trucks of all sizes clogging the National Highway. The frequent commotion and confusion being reported is not only associated with the number of commercial trucks but with them comes pollution at an uncontrollable rate, and if the toothless Meghalaya Pollution Control Board would do an on-site sample collection the data would speak volumes of ‘sick’ air that people of Shillong and other areas breathe. The Transport Department and other agencies involved cannot control the flow of coal laden trucks due to lack of political and administrative will that seems to have been bought at a price. Why can’t the government ban trucks older than 10 years old from plying on the road? Perhaps there is too much at stake to impose such an order. Perhaps a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court is the only remedy left for the people of Meghalaya.

Wake up MBOSE
Editor,
Through your esteemed daily I wish to draw the attention of the authorities the callousness in chalking out the Examination Schedule for Class XII (Science) for 2012 which has recently been announced and published in your daily. Like me many guardians/parents were shocked to see that after writing the paper (Alt. Eng./MIL) the students will have to come back to their exam venues the very next day for writing one of their three main papers, i.e. Physics, which is perhaps the toughest paper. They also won’t have time to freshen up their minds. There are lots of unnecessary off-days before all other papers. But, they did not notice that students will have no time to leaf through even a single chapter of their Physics book before sitting for this paper. This type of callousness of MBOSE officials earn a bad name to the state for its inability to provide proper education to its students. Obtaining poor marks in Physics will spoil the future of our students. There are certain institutions, which, besides competitive exams. also consider the marks obtained in SSLC/HSSLC exams by the students. During campus interviews also, performance in SSLC/HSSLC is taken into account. The undersigned has spoken to many students. All of them are disappointed/have become frustrated and this is certainly going to have an adverse effect on their performance on other papers as well. I don’t understand when all other boards (CBSE/ISC) give enough time to their students before each and every paper why MBOSE took such a whimsical decision which stamps its inefficiency.
I will, therefore, request MBOSE officers to kindly reconsider/modify the Exam schedule and give some break to the children for their Physics paper.
Yours etc.,
Rajesh Chakravarty,
