SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma underscored the need to audit buildings and commercial complexes in the city keeping in mind the fact that Shillong falls under seismic V zone.

Addressing the inaugural function of the sensitization programme for the elected representatives on integration of urban risk management reduction element in development plan in Hotel Pinewood on Thursday , Mukul Sangma stated that auditing is needed as Meghalaya is prone to earthquake catastrophe.

It may be mentioned that the State Government recently decided to send a team of government officials involved in providing training on disaster management to Sikkim to assess the impact of the recent earthquake which has left a trail of death and destruction in the state

Taking a queue from the recent incident where even fire tenders could not move inside a colony in Laitumkhrah during a major fire due to narrow roads, the Chief Minister stated that each and every locality should be reachable during a disaster so that aids can reach the spot well on time.

“There is a need for comprehensive plan for urban areas and we need to rope in all the individuasl in the sensitization programme,” Chief Minister Mukul Sangma added.

The State Government earlier also planned to coordinate with various Central agencies to set up an early warning signal system to forewarn people against impending natural calamities in the State.
