Shillong: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has hinted that maintenance of law and order is the priority of his Government.
Talking to media person here on Friday, the Chief Minister categorically said, “The Government’s responsibility is to ensure that the law of the land is upheld and respected.”
It may be mentioned that the GNLA militant group had issued a ten-day deadline to the State Government to withdraw the central forces stationed in Garo Hills who are currently tackling the activates of GNLA.
According to Dr Sangma, the recent abduction of a BDO and two traders shows that the GNLA has gone into over-drive and want the security forces to be withdrawn.
Presently, security forces of CoBRA and Meghalaya police besides others are operating in Garo Hills to flush out the GNLA militants.
After being in captivity for eleven days, the GNLA finally released the two Assam-based traders in West Garo Hills district but, there is no information on the whereabouts of Dadenggre BDO Prafulla Kr Boro who has been in the captivity of the Garo militant group for the last ten days.
The Chief Minister also termed the abduction of the BDO and other officers as cheap tactics of GNLA.
“Kidnapping officers who are serving the people in rural areas is a cheap and dirty tactic and should be condemned by all right thinking people,” Dr Sangma added.
The militant group has been insisting that special commando units known as SWAT from the Meghalaya police and CoBRA units of CRPF and the BSF must return to their bases if the government wishes the safe return of its state civil service officer PK Boro.
Pointing out that the State Government is committed to ending violence, Dr Sangma stated that armed struggle would not resolve the present problems. He said there are democratic ways of addressing issues.
“The activities of the GNLA will not help the State to achieve peace,” the Chief Minister added.
