SILCHAR (ASSAM): The Border Security Force (BSF) has taken up several measures to minimise illegal infiltration and smuggling along the Indo-Bangla border. BSF Inspector General of Mizoram-Cachar Frontier Manoharlal Botham told reporters here on Friday that the force has put up flood lights, constructed border roads and has undertaken measures for fencing along the border which has already helped in minimising border crimes.

In the Silchar sector, a total of 88.13 per cent of the 133 km of road under construction along the border has been completed while fencing work of 72.94 per cent of the 138 km has also been completed. Border road work of 3.83 per cent and 4.79 per cent of fencing could not be initiated due to land dispute.

Mizoram has 336 km of international border but only 13 per cent has been converted into border roads. Work is in progress in 58 per cent of the area while fencing has been completed in 19 per cent of the total area. Botham said that with flood lights, better border roads and fencing, there has been considerable decrease in border crimes.

BSF arrested 88 persons, seized medicines, fake currency, contraband including heroin, ganja and arms and ammunitions last year. (PTI)
