SHILLONG: The illegal collection along the National Highway 62 has once again came to haunt the State Government with Opposition NCP alleging that the a weighbridge leased by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) at Wageasi, East Garo Hills, is collecting Rs 1,200 from each truck passing through it defying government approved rates.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, NCP leader Conrad Sangma demanded action against toll gate operators along the National Highway 62 in the State for “charging inflated tax from trucks plying through it.”
The matter came into light when an Assembly Sub Committee probing the alleged extortion by toll gate operators along the NH 62 visited a few check gates. “We have documents to support our findings,” Sangma, who is also the leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, said.
According to him, the revenue generation would have been much higher had this alleged extortion amount gone to the State exchequer. The sub committee at first will submit its report to the House committee in January after which the all-party House Committee will table its report in the State Assembly during the next Bugdet session.
It may be mentioned that the all-party House Committee, which was scheduled to submit its report in the recently concluded Assembly session, had sought for more time to complete its probe.
