SHILLONG: The Federation of Riwar Mihngi Local Dorbars (FORMLD) has asked President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil for nominating John F Kharshiing to the Rajya Sabha.
In a memorandum sent to the President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, the Federation urged that John F Kharshiing has been serving the people of border areas for many years.
Citing an example of his service to the rural people, the federation said that in the year 2001 Bangladesh Rifles and soldiers had ransacked the Indo Bangla border at Pyrdiwah.
“John Kharshiing was the first person to inform the district authorities who were unaware of the gravity of the situation as BSF had refused to inform the authorities hoping that they would solve the problem locally,” the statement added.
According to the Federation, Kharshiing can be nominated to Rajya Sabha under article 80 sub-clause (a) of the Constitution of India.
“He can contribute a lot in the important proceedings of the parliament,” FORMLD general secretary Peter D Rynjah added in a statement.
