IMPHAL: The Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) on Wednesday indicated to re-impose economic blockade on national highways leading to Manipur as the Government of Manipur has failed to implement the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed on October 31.

A meeting of the SHDDC executives and senior leaders of Sadar Hills was held at Kangpokpi on Wednesday to review the MoU, which was supposed to be implemented by November, signed between the Government of Manipur and the committee and discussed in length its stand in this regard, SHDDC general secretary Tonghen Kipgen told Newmai News Network over telephone.

He said according to the MoU, the State Government should have created a new district of Sadar Hills by November but nothing has so far come up in this regard till on Wednesday.

“From tomorrow, area mobilization will be started and public opinion will also be sought on certain two points, adding that the first point is whether to trust the sincerity of the State Government and the second point is that should SHDDC with the support of the public take decision to re-impose the suspended economic blockade and in case the economic blockade on National Highways is to start again, before the upcoming polls to the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly, it would go on forthwith till our demand is met even after the general elections also”, Kipgen said.

He also said they do not bother about the coming Christmas festival or the election code of conduct, saying they only bother about their rights that have been remained denied for the last 40 years.

The final list of the area wise mobilization will be submitted on December 16 and the decision will also be make known to the public, he added.

The SHDDC questioned the motive of the Chief Minister when he said, “Series of problems come up while trying to solve a particular problem”, in his address to the public at Kangla during the recent visit of the Prime Minister and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to Imphal on December 3 last.

The SHDDC general secretary said 50 per cent of the problems of Manipur are solved if the Sadar Hills issue is solved and added that those who are opposing the demand of SHDDC are presumably standing against the integrity of Manipur and its Government. Kipgen asserted that the people of Sadar Hills are agitating for equitable development and they will also fight for territorial integrity of the State. (NNN)
