SHILLONG: State Chief Election Officer P Naik on Wednesday said that KHNAM will cease to exist once it merges with UDP.

“It is not valid for KHNAM to continue as a political party once it is merged with UDP,” Naik said.

Informing that there were a lot of procedures in place which have to be followed when a party merges with another political party, Naik said, “The Election Commission will examine the whole procedure and will subsequently send its reply in short time,” Naik told reporters here on Wednesday.

It may be reminded that the KHNAM rebel group led by Pyndapborthiaw Saiborne lodged a complaint with the Chief Election Officer recently, terming the dissolution of the KHNAM as illegal.

The rebels had also sent copies of the complaints to the Election Commission of India and also to the Assembly Speaker Charles Pyngrope.

They had urged upon the Election Commission not to recognize the dissolution of the party since it did not fulfill the mandatory constitutional requirements of the party.

Naik also informed that he would meet the KHNAM rebel group on Thursday to discuss the issue.
