Shillong: The Branch Manager of United Bank of India (UBI) Mawlai Nonglum branch, Dambarudhar Deka, was arrested on Thursday on charges of accepting bribe. Deka was caught while taking a bribe of Rs 3000 from one Michael Bareh who had gone to the branch to seek a loan under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), police sources said, adding the arrested was made under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
It is learnt that Deka has initially demanded Rs 10,000 for processing the loan but after negotiation the amount was reduced to Rs 5000. Bareh had, earlier lodged a complaint at Mawlai PS. After paying Rs 3000 to the bank manager he was asked to pay the remaining amount of Rs 2000 by December 13. The arrest followed after investigation by police.
Deka complained of sickness after his arrest and was admitted at a hospital.
Meanwhile, the Chief Manager of the UBI Main Branch said that he was not formally informed or communicated about the incident. “When we came to know, we went there officially,” said the official. He also informed that Deka hails from Nagaon district of Assam.
