SHILLONG: Royal Wahingdoh FC had a good run in the year so far beating seasoned teams in the Federation Cup and claiming the Bordoloi and Shillong Premier League trophies recently. Their players are skilled and the club looks all set to make a mark at the national arena soon. But that is not all about the soccer heroes of the State. The Royals also contribute to the cause of the underprivileged children of the society and the club has been associated with the Providence School, which imparts education to over three hundred children, for two years.

Wahingdoh has taken this up task as part of its social responsibility towards the society.

Not only this, the club features the name of the school at the back of its jersey to promote the institution.

“We feel proud to carry the name of the school on the back of our jersey,” Wahingdoh owner Dominic Sutnga said while recalling that many of the fans in Pune were more curious to know about the school rather than the team.

To strengthen its ties, Wahindoh held a pre-Christmas celebration for the children on Friday. As part of the programme, the children had an interactive session with the senior players of the club. The players also organised some games for the youngsters.

Earlier, Wahingdoh captain Seityacen Singh handed over a check of Rs 3 lakhs to one of the children of the school. The money which was donated was part of the team’s match fees received from the various tournaments played during the year.

Royal’s coach Carlton Chapman said that the team is proud to be able to contribute towards the welfare of the school.

“I would be very happy to see some of the children from the school play for the club in future,” he said.

It may be mentioned that Wahingdoh also provides training to around 40 children from the school atleast thrice a week.

The club’s owner also assured the school management of his support for the team’s participatuion in the Subroto Cup next year.
