Awareness programme on preserving environment

 SHILLONG: A one-day awareness programme on the theme “Conserve & Preserve the Environment” organized by the members of Greenfield School, Sohra was held recently at Saitsohpen Community Hall, Sohra. Sub-Divisional Officer (C), Sohra Civil Sub-Division JD Suchiang,was the chief guest.

Suchiang lauded the members of the school for taking initiative in organizing such a programme which would serve as a platform of community participation against degradation of the environment. He was also of view that other schools should take up such steps in educating students about the potentials of environmentally sound development which is the crucial step in understanding the problems that demand ecological restoration activities and the adverse impact on humans and other living things though degradation of forest. He therefore stressed upon the need of planning and preservation of trees with a hope that more involvement of schools and community participation in this aspect will auger well for the future generation.

Others who spoke at the function were B Ranee, EAC, Sohra Civil Sub-Division and AM Marbaniang, Range Forest Officer, Sohra. The students of Greenfield School also presented a song and drama on the theme. Earlier student took out a rally through the streets of Cherra carrying placards bearing slogans which conveyed messages on environmental protection.
