Shillong: Women trainee officers outperformed men as 96 trainee officers of the 37th batch from five North Eastern states passed out from the North Eastern Police Academy (NEPA) on Wednesday after completing a one-year basic training on counter insurgency.
The 37th batch consisted of 32 Deputy Superintendents of Police, 56 Sub Inspectors and 8 Assistant Sub Inspectors of Police from five North Eastern states (Nagaland-52, Arunachal Pradesh-18, Manipur-18, Meghalaya-6, and Tripura-2).
These officers were trained on a well-researched module approved by Bureau Research and Development which is aimed at optimizing their operational efficiency both theoretically and practical besides subjecting them to sensitization modules on various key issues like gender sensitivity, drug abuse, etc.
These 96 officers were commissioned into active policing by Deputy Chief Minister Bindo M Lanong during the passing out parade at NEPA headquarters at Umiam.
“The passing out parade marks the beginning of commitment towards their responsibilities and duties in accordance with the law,” Lanong said while adding that peace will only exist if the police and the public work together.
While terming these officers as ‘peace makers’, Lanong said, “You are here to help and serve the people in need of your service even if you have to go against the wish of your party.” Lanong also lauded the female cadets for receiving more trophies and medals than the male cadets. “I think the men lacks seriousness as compared to the women,” Lanong remarked in jest.
Established in 1978, NEPA trains over 500 police officers on an average every year. During 2011, 924 police officers from different states of the country have been trained in 41 in-service courses.
Meanwhile, 19 officers including two from Meghalaya were presented with medals and trophies for their achievements in various disciplines.
Among others present at the passing out function included Meghalaya Chief Secretary WMS Pariat, Director of NEPA, AK Mathur, former NEPA Director and Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi district, Akash Deep besides a host of other officials.
