Shillong: The Meghalaya Youth NCP has alleged that many cement companies in Jaintia Hills are extracting mineral resources by conspicuously flouting environmental norms and guidelines laid down under the Forest and Conservation Act.

“During our recent visit to the mining sites we found that majority of the cement plants were operating in the middle of forested areas. We have seen how cement factories operate in forest areas and some of these plants have even been set up in areas surrounded by forest,” Meghalaya NCP youth working president, Clifford M Nengnong, said in a statement here.

Nengnong also asked the State Government to make public the report of the high-level probe which was constituted to carry out an appraisal of the land being utilised by cement companies in Jaintia Hills. The report had been submitted to the State Government in November.
