Margao/SHILLONG Churchill Brothers, on a high after their wins over table toppers Dempo and Chirag United Kerala, are now aiming to move to the top of the standings as they take on Shillong Lajong on Saturday in the 10th round of the I-League, at Margao.
Churchill, placed second with 20 points from 6 wins, 2 draws and a loss, are only one point behind table toppers Dempo Sports Club with 21 points and would certainly go all out for a win, as hunt for three points will help them to climb at the top of the table.
But they cannot afford to be complacent, as Shillong team is also know for its quick approach and presently placed 9th with 12 points from three wins, and 3 draws from equal number of outings.
Lajong held Mohan Bagan in a goalless draw in one of the last match.
Churchill Brothers manager Denzil Ferrao said his team had no injury and double booking hassle. ”Boys are in the upbeat mood after winning against Dempo and Chirag United by an identical margin 2-1 and hope, they will display the same performance and win”.
His main aim was to garner full points on Saturday. “Shilong Lajong is a good team and it will be tough match,” he added.
Churchill are a well balanced side, both on paper and performance with potent strike force– Gabonse Henry Arnaud, with 3 goals in his name, Nigerian N D Opara, Stevan Dias, Roberto Mendis Silva( Beto) and Mohammed Rafi in the middle, all are quick to seize the chances that came their way.
Churchill also have a dependable defence with Antun Kovacic and Gouramangi Singh.
The Shillong team, who have come here with a victory against Mumbai FC, expected to put up a strong challenge against the Goan.
Shillong Lajong as usual will depend mainly on John Menyomgar, PC Lalhilimthra and Eugeneson Lyngdoh to deliver the goods.
Lajong coach Pradhyum Reddy is happy that his boys are playing well.
“It is a tough match and it is going to be a challenge against Churchill Brothers who have the advantage of playing at home. We have our task cut out and are ready to put up a fight, and hopefully, collect a point if not a win,” said Reddy.
“We didn’t have any practice when we came here to play Sporting and Dempo, it was an expected result. We are hoping to change the pattern against Churchill and secure a positive result,” said the Lajong coach. A win against Churchill will see Lajong jump three places.
