SHILLONG: The excavation work going on in Khyndai Lad area is causing a lot of inconvenience to the general public.

The timing of the excavation work is not right when the area is flooded by people who come for shopping with Christmas and New Year round the corner.

With overcrowding, the people are having a huge problem to walk since the width of the road has been reduced with the ongoing excavation work.

The whole area is in a total mess due to the mud. It is also dangerous for people to walk especially along the stretch of the footpath opposite Bijou Cinema Hall due to the wet mud which has made it slippery.

However, it is interesting to observe that the excavation work was left out only at the stretch of the footpath opposite to Bhajanlal’s shop and taken up only from stretch of the footpath opposite Palace, Centre Point upto Bijou Cinema Hall.

Speaking to The Shillong Times on Friday, a shopper A Jyrwa said that the Government should not have started the excavation work when the festive season is on.

“It is very difficult for the people to walk when the footpath has become too small. Due to overcrowding, people are pushing one another,” Jyrwa said.

A young college student J Rapmai said that the Government could have waited for another two weeks when the festive is over.

“There is danger that people might get injured since the condition of the footpath is very bad,” Rapmai said.

It may be mentioned that the State PWD has targeted to complete the ongoing beautification work of Khyndailad by monsoon next year.

The projects which include beautification of Khyndailad and its adjoining areas, besides widening of roads in certain stretches of the city is being taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 16.73 crore.

Presently the PWD is carrying out the ground work for the project after which they will take up the work for putting cobbled footpaths and inter-locking tiles.

Initially, the State Government will first beautify the first 57 metres from the Khyndailad junction till the end of MUDA shopping complex and then the beautification work would further proceed to the entire stretch till Umsohsun and Sadar police station.
