SHILLONG: Royal Wahingdoh FC (RWFC) made it to the semi-final of the 22nd All India Meghalaya Invitation Football Tournament 2011 after defeating Yeti Himalayan Sherpas Club, Nepal 3-0 in the last quarter league match played at First Division Ground, Polo here on Saturday.
With this victory, RWFC is also set to face local rivals Ar-Hima in the first semi-final on Monday. This would be a repeat of the Shillong Premier League (SPL) final where Royal Wahingdoh won by a solitary goal to emerge champion.
In the second semi-final, Langsning would take on Meghalaya Police Football Team on Tuesday.
RWFC dominated the match from the word go. Champion went into the lead after its striker Chesterfield Thangkhiew scored a gem of a goal in the 17th minute of the match.
The Nepal team came back very strongly after this goal but it was RWFC strong defence which denied them any opening to score.
At the time when the Yeti Himalayan Sherpas players were pushing hard to get the equalizer, RWFC scored their second goal in the 43rd minute after Lalchawnkima headed the ball right into the nets following a well crafted pass from the left flank.
After the break, the Nepal team continues to dominate the ball possession. But it was the strong RWFC defence which continues to play spoilt sport to the efforts of the Himalayan Sherpas.
Finally, RWFC sealed the match after Marlangki Suting’s powerful strike from about 30 yards saw the ball go past Himalayan Sherpas’ custodian to give the home team a convincing 3-0 victory.
