SHILLONG: The locality cleaning drives held in various parts of the city recently by the respective Durbar Shnong were a successful one. These cleaning drives were organized in Laban, Mawlai, Lumparing, Keating Road and other localities in the town.

What makes the Keating Road cleaning drive more successful, than other such drives carried elsewhere in the city, is the 100% community participation in the area. The General Secretary, KRWO said that the cleaning drive started at 8:30am in the morning and culminated at 2pm with 100% participation by household members and shopkeepers of the area.

The areas covered under the cleaning drive are Greater Keating Road, General Post Office (GPO), Central Telecom Office (CTO) and its adjoining areas such as Barik Government Quarters, Kachari Road up to Police Bazaar (Yogamaya Store). The General Secretary informed that the cleaning drive was a successful one as it was conducted in close coordination with the residents and commercial establishments of the area. On December 22 the KRWO will organize an advance Christmas celebration at 4pm.

Such successful cleaning drives were also held in other parts of the city. In Laitumkhrah towards Lummawrie roadside drains were repaired along with the cleaning drives. This trend is also seen in the Laban where its alleys and lanes, roadside drains and staircases were repaired with cement and mortar. It has been seen that residents and other dwellers along with commercial establishments have participated in every locality.

Meanwhile, residents of these localities opined that an award can be constituted by the state government to declare the most hygienic and clean locality out of such drives. “Such awards will motivate and invite more people to participate in this community drive for cleanliness,” said a resident from Mawlai Nongkwar. Another such resident said that such an award with consolation prizes too, will encourage residents to emulate the habits of Mawlynnong, the cleanest village.
