SHILLONG: The residents of Hima Langrin have demanded the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to immediately remove the acting Syiem of Hima Langrin citing constant assertion of brute power by the chieftain.

Taking advantage of the fact that he is in power, the Acting Syiem Nangtei Singh Syiemiong has been claiming ownership of two 20 square miles (each) land which falls under the jurisdiction of the Hima Langrin—Lawlangngam Tila and Pynden Tanglieh, alleged the residents.

Around 362 villagers including Sordars and Rangbah Shnong of around 6 to 7 Raid of the Hima Langrin marched to the KHADC on Tuesday afternoon to opine the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the KHADC, PN Syiem and the Executive Member In charge of Elaka, Lamphrang Blah of the high handedness of the acting Syiem of Hima Langrin.

It is learnt that Syiemiong’s mother had lodged a case in 1990, claiming ownership of the said lands but the case had been pending till one and half year back when Nangtei Singh Syiemiong was appointed the Acting Syiem of Hima Langrin.

“This case is very complicated and we suspect that there could some back door approach behind the appointment of Syiemiong as the acting Syiem”, the villagers alleged.

They also mentioned that in this regard, a complaint has been lodged with the KHADC since August and after four months of waiting, the date of hearing was finally declared by the CEM on Tuesday. However, the date has been postponed to January 20, 2012.

Meanwhile, Rangbah Shnong of Nonghyllam village D Nongtngier alleged that Syiemiong has been found asserting brute power by forcefully appointing a Rangbah Shnong of the said village without the knowledge of the people of that village.

However, after much intervention by the people, Marwein was removed as the Rangbah Shnong and Nongtngier was elected in his stead by the people.
