Aizawl: Over 4,835 government teachers from 541 schools in Mizoram have not been paid their salaries since October due to lack of funds, state Education Minister Lalsawta said on Tuesday.

“The education minister at a meeting, while replying to a query of C Ramhluna of the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), said the teachers could not draw their salaries as required allocation was not sanctioned in the plan allocation,” an official told reporters.

The official, quoting the minister, said that Rs 63.11 crore fund was required for payment of salaries to the teachers during the current financial year (2011-12).

Lalsawta told the MNF legislator that the state finance and planning departments were making all-out efforts to ensure that the teachers and other government employees, who have not received salaries, get paid before the Christmas celebration.

Another official of the state education department on condition of anonymity told reporters that besides the government school teachers, there were thousands of teachers from government-aided schools who also did not get their salaries for several months. (IANS)
