SHILLONG:The Opposition NCP has demanded that the Government should immediately approach the Centre for the formation of Inter-State Border Dispute Commission to sort out the border impasse with Assam.

In a statement issued here on Tuesday, NCP spokesperson James Sangma slammed the MUA Government for not taking any steps to sort out the long pending border row with Assam. The statement came from the NCP after the Assam Legislative Assembly decided against constitution of an inter-state border dispute commission to re-examine and redefine the boundary between Assam and Meghalaya.“The passing of a Resolution in the present Winter Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly wherein it was unanimously resolved not to constitute an inter-state border dispute commission is indicative of the fact that the MUA Government has not taken up the Boundary issue with Assam earnestly and with seriousness,” James Sangma added.

The resolution of the Assam Assembly has come as a shock for the State Government as Meghalaya Assembly earlier had adopted a resolution, asking the Centre to form a commission to demarcate the boundary with Assam.

According to Sangma, all the talks of the MUA Government held with the Assam counterpart was only an eyewash meant to fool the people of Meghalaya.

The border tussle between Assam and Meghalaya took an ugly turn when four people were shot dead by Assam police in Langpih last year.

The two State Government after the incident last year had decided to constitute a joint committee to solve the border problem between two states and 45 days were given to both the states to prepare its modalities for their claims on the controversial plot of lands.

But it took long to prepare the modalities and after the modalities were formed and the committee did not had much interaction and meeting to sort out the long vexed border row.

NCP leader James Sangma also stated that the constitution of an Inter-State Border Dispute Committee would have been the first step towards finding an amicable solution which could have been easily formed if both the Congress Government in Meghalaya and Assam were to take up the matter with utmost sincerity.

“This is a complete failure and shows the incompetence of the Dr. Mukul Sangma led Government,” Sangma asserted.
