SHILLONG: Many of the roadside restaurants and eating joints situated along the Guwahati-Shillong road particularly in Nongpoh is in dire straits due to its filthy condition.

People have complained that there are many restaurants and eating joints which serve food in a very unhygienic condition.

A filthy smell welcomes the customers who visit these badly maintained restaurants.

The toilets here are found to be in the worst condition and it seems that they have not been cleaned for centuries.

It may be mentioned that hundreds of commuters who travel between Guwahati and Shillong are left with no other option but to satisfy their hunger in these restaurants.

A frequent commuter from Assam expressed shock over the condition of the eateries located on the national highway

“Everything in these restaurants seems to be so dirty but I will have to eat something here as I can’t travel a 100 kilometer without eating anything,” a commuter added.

However, there are few clean and well maintained eateries in and around Nongpoh but they cannot be afforded by all.

A tourist from Kolkata also stated that these eateries need to be in good and clean condition as hundreds of tourists who visit Shillong first enter these eateries for food.

When contacted, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Akashdeep said that he appointed a food inspector two weeks back to look into the cleanliness of all the restaurants and other eateries in the district.

He also stated that if people complain about the filthy condition of any of these restaurants, the district administration would take stringent action against them.
