Tablet PCs to be used for Census in Assam

 GUWAHATI: With the arrival of the tablet computers, Assam government is all set to begin the process of on-field collection for the Socio-economic and Caste Census, 2011, from December 30. Those computers will be used for recording and compiling the data of the survey.

Assam Panchayat and Rural Development department Minister Rockybul Hussain said informed, “The process has been delayed as the tablet PCs did not arrive in time. But we are now going to have a stock and ready to start the work.”

The tablet PCs were handed over to the deputy commissioners of Kamrup rural and metro districts here on Wednesday by the minister, while it has been sent to the DCs in other districts. The DCs will act as the principle census officers.

Hussain said the census has already started in Darrang, Goalpara and Jorhat districts from Tuesday to examine and ensure that the process is without any loopholes and if any changes are needed, these can be incorporated before the task starts throughout the state. The training of census personnel has already been completed in the first phase.

The date collection process will involve 40,000 personnel and will be completed in 45 days time.

The Centre has sanctioned Rs 45 crore for the process and the Panchayat and Rural Development department would be the nodal agency in the state.

The state has been divided into 64,359 enumeration blocks and 20,000 tablet PCs have been provided by the Electronic Corporation of India Ltd for the purpose.
