Shillong: In a major breakthrough, city police on Friday arrested four-member dacoit gang from Nongrim Hills in city and recovered several stolen items including five mobile phones, one digital camera, one walkman (mini-tape), nine keys, four wrist watches, one clipper, earrings and bangles, five wallets and Rs 20,000 in cash.
Informing this here on Friday, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Crime) Vivek Syiem, who led the police team, said the quartet was involved in several cases of burglary, theft and robbery.
Syiem said the assault case at Civil Hospital on December 9 led them to this gang by tracking their phone numbers.
Police also seized two blood-stained dau (tukri), one ATM card belonging to one Pratima Bhattacharjee, some identity cards, an Epic card, one roll of fine cloth, one hammer, wheel-caps.
The apprehended persons are identified as Mithu Dhar (25), Tahir Hussain Chaudhuri (25), Akash Deb (25) and Tinku Das (23). They belong to different places of Shillong.
It is suspected that Tinku Das was involved in several bike theft cases whereas Mithu Dhar was involved in several burglary cases, while the rest were involved in several cases of house breaking, burglary, theft to highway robbery. The senior police official said these four criminals had been staying together and their places of interest include Civil Hospital, New Colony, Mahavir Point, opposite Circuit house, Laitumkhrah and many other places. They also allegedly drew money from the ATM card belonging to Pratima Bhattacharjee. Commenting on the blood-stained dau, the DSP (Crime) said the cookery items had been used as weapons to assault two people-R Dympep and N Lyngdoh at Civil Hospital during the wee hours of December 9 wherein they managed to snatch away mobile phones and cash amount of Rs 1200.
