AIZAWL: With Christmas extravaganza coming to an end, Mizos are eagerly looking forward to yet another grand party on New Year’s Day.
The celebrations of Christmas were crowned with a grand community feast by most of the churches on December 26 in the Christian dominated state of Mizoram.
However, most of the shops and government offices remained closed on Tuesday, which was a restricted holiday, and the streets wore a deserted look as people stayed indoors.
Christmas Day was observed as a thanksgiving day by most of the churches in Mizoram with people in new Christmas dresses thronging the churches, and a big banquet was thrown on the Boxing Day, December 26.
The streets came alive with Christmas decorations at every strategic point where revellers flock to take pictures almost 24 hours a day.
The Hindu and Muslim community in Aizawl also joined their Christian brethren in prayer on the occasion of Christmas – the Hindus at the Hindustan Club of Aizawl and the Muslims at the Aizawl Mosque.
According to police sources, crime rate and vehicular accidents during Christmas festivals have been on a decline since the last three years, and attributed this positive sign to the active cooperation from the state’s NGOs who maintained 24-hour surveillance to curb crimes and violations of liquor prohibition during the festive season.
Life virtually came to a standstill during the days between Christmas and New Year in Mizoram as people are in festive mood. (UNI)
