GUWAHATI: Most of the fish supply in Assam comes from outside, specially Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, but with help from ‘matsyamitras’ the state can see a boost in local production, Fisheries Department said.
Trained by the College of Fisheries, ‘matsyamitras’, the fishermen, will in turn train fish-farmers to increase production which is currently estimated at 236 million kg or just one-fourth of the state’s total requirement. This would bring down import of fish to a lare extent.
According to Fisheries Department sources, nearly 359 ‘matsyamitras’ are now on the job, giving support and advice to the farmers about the water quality, fish health, seed and others.
Apart from the traditional fishermen, unemployed youths have come forward to show interest in diversified fish farming. The Fisheries Research Institute of the state is gearing up to support interested young men in an effort to increase local production of fish. (PTI)
