IMPHAL: Security forces and police have been deployed at the premises of some major media houses in poll-bound Manipur following threat from militant outfits, official sources said on Wednesday.

Sources said a militant outfit placed a powerful hand grenade at the main door of a vernacular daily, ‘Naharolgi Thoudang’ (The role of youth) on January 2 with a letter stating ‘This is the last warning. Next time there will be an explosion’.

Protesting against the incident, the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) called for an emergency meeting of editors and senior journalists on Wednesday during which they appealed to the government to provide security to the other media houses too, an AMWJU spokesman said on Wednesday. He said the Union has urged the state govt to provide security to the other media houses.

Militant outfit Kangleipak communist Party-Military Council (Lanchen Chanu group) had claimed that they placed the grenade before the gate of ‘Naharolgi Thoudang.’

Official and AMWJU sources said various militant outfits have been disturbing the media houses in Manipur over the years demanding that their press releases should be published without editing which the scribes could not accept. (PTI)
