NONGSTOIN: A visit to various beautiful tourists spot in West Khasi Hills by this scribe and it was found that the State Government through the Tourism Department has leftmost of the beautiful tourist spots of the district unattended.

It has been found that the Mawthadraishan Hill is a marvelous hill where there are about five water lakes available on top of this hill. Inspite of its natural beauty the number of tourists visiting these areas is very low as compare to the past three consecutive years.

The main reason for the low turnout of the tourists is largely due to the dilapidating road condition of the whole West Khasi Hills district in general.

Speaking to media persons at Mawthadraishan, one of the villagers said, “Due to the bad conditions of road, most of the tourist spots in West Khasi Hills have lost their scenic beauty.

The district was blessed with many beautiful tourist spots but it is unfortunate for the people of the area and the whole of West Khasi Hills as the state government through the Department of Tourism has turned a blind eye to these spots..“We urge the government to see and help developing these areas, as these spots will bring a lot of income to the state exchequer.’’

He also mentioned that due to the bad road condition of Nongkhnum the second largest water island in South East Asia, the number of tourists visiting the place has gone down year by year.

During the past three years ago number of foreign tourists visited the Island, but this 2011 no foreigners was seen visiting this marvelous water lake. It is a shame to both the state tourism department as well as the PWD (road) which have not done anything at all in this connection. Even during this winter season the local visitors can be termed as almost nil as compared to the preceding winter season, he lamented.
