SHILLONG: The family members of a BSF personnal, travelling in a vehicle, were looted and some of them assaulted near Nongpoh in Ri-Bhoi district on Friday night by miscreants.

According to police, the incident took place at around 10 pm on Friday when the BSF constable and his family were coming from Guwahati to Shillong in a tourist taxi.

The miscreants, who were following the tourist taxi in a sumo, accosted the family and looted and assaulted them after their vehicle had stopped due to the traffic snarl at a place near Nongpoh. The miscreants decamped with Rs 90,000 in cash and gold ornaments after assaulting the occupants of the vehicle.

The BSF constable who tried to resist the attack was injured in the scuffle along with his wife and his sister-in-law. Later the wife was shifted to a hospital in Guwahati.

Nongpoh Police on Saturday said that the sumo was found abandoned at at Assam-Meghalaya border. The driver of the sumo, later, surrendered at a police station in Assam.

The police seized both the sumo and the tourist taxi and subsequently a police team rushed to Assam to take custody of the driver.

“We are also investigating whether the driver of the tourist taxi had any links with the miscreants,” a senior police added.
