 SHILLONG: The chairperson of Impulse NGO Hasina Kharbhih was conferred with the prestigious “North East Excellence Award” on Friday at Le-Meridien, New Delhi by the Indian Chamber of Commerce for her contribution in the field of social service and contribution in the development of of North Eastern Region.

Ms Kharbhih said that the award was given in recognition of her outstanding services in social welfare works in connection with human rights, child trafficking, HIV and Aids intervention, livelihood support programmes among others in rural northeast.

Speaking further she said that the human right issues, child trafficking was as per her Meghalaya Model which was a holistic approach to provide in the changing face of leadership challenges in the region. She created the nationally and internationally acknowledged Meghalaya Model, a comprehensive tracking system that successfully brings together the state government, security agencies, legal groups, media and citizen organizations to combat cross-border trafficking of children in the porous northeastern states. “Introduction of livelihood initiative for rural artisans, human rights training for uniform personnel, HIV related issues which are recognized by both domestic and international organizations and a roadmap for social activities in Northeast India,” she said after receiving the award.Informing that Impulse Social Enterprises, a company which was formed last year, though is a profit making organization will donate 60% of its earnings to the development sector of the region. “It will target large scale livelihood initiatives for rural artisans because if employment opportunities are created locally then there is no transfer of skills or dearth of manpower,” she said.

On the notion of people from mainland India on the region, Ms Kharbhih said that it is more about what people read. “The more such summits and events are organized in the region it will involve a cross section of interaction and give a new perspective, understanding and awareness about the region. Now what people know is more from what they actually read. But such a summit will bring in an understanding about the region, conception with a lot of interaction and positive information,” she opined.

She has also received numerous recognitions including the Asia Award for Excellence in Youth Work from the Commonwealth Youth Programme Commonwealth Secretariat, Woman of Substance Award from the Ryan Foundation, India and the Rising Talent Award from the Women’s Forum for the Economy and Society France.
