One person dies in leopard attack in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: One person was killed and three others were injured in an attack by a leopard, who had strayed into the heart of the city after straying from its habitat in the nearby hills.

Debu Kumar Das, a resident of Silpukhri area of the city, was critically injured by the animal on Saturday and succumbed to his injuries at the Gauhati Medical College hospital here on Sunday, official sources said.

The three others injured are being treated in the hospital, the sources said.

State zoo divisional forest officer Utpal Bora said the animal which had strayed out of its habitat from the forest in the outskirts of the city on Saturday.

On being informed the zoo personnel arrived on the spot and tranquilised the animal, which had run into a house after being chased by locals, he said.

The animal would be freed in the forest area in a day or two, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest S Chand said. (PTI)
