ITANAGAR: Diyun Police fired five rounds in air to rescue an IRBn constable who was allegedly being assaulted by a group of students after he was suspected to have knocked down a class-I girl student with his bike on Saturday, according to Changlang SP Tume Amo.

When police reached the spot, they were obstructed from rescuing the constable by students of Diyun secondary school who refused to part with him and threw stones in which a police vehicle was damaged.

To bring the situation under control, police had to fire in the air to scare away the mob. Later, they rescued the cop who had been badly injured and the child with bruises. The injured were treated at Diyun CHC, the SP told UNI over telephone on Sunday.

However, soon after the incident, about 300 enraged students gheraoed the police station concerned, demanding handing over of the IRBn constable, his pillion rider and other accused police personnel to them.

Despite all efforts of the OC along with some public leaders to pacify the group, they started pelting stones in which an IRBn constable received serious head injury, glass windows of the police station were broken and the personal vehicle of the OC was damaged.

The mob then allegedly attempted to break open the lock up to take away the pillion rider in custody.

Left with no alternative police and IRBn personnel, who were brought in from the nearby IRBn HQs, had to fire around 59 rounds in the air again to disperse the angry mob, the SP said, adding the situation was brought under control.

Police with the help of CRPF personnel launched round-the-clock patrolling in the township with the SP along with the SDPO and circle inspector constantly monitoring the situation, he informed.

A case had been registered in this respect and investigation launched, the SP said, adding the IRBn constable was the pillion rider who was picking up the injured child to take her to the hospital when he was mistakenly attacked.

Meanwhile, the police firing incident at Lowr Dibang Valley district HQs Roing on October five last year in which several students were injured during the Durga Puja celebration, had been handed over to the special investigation team (SIT) at the direction of the chief minister. (UNI)
