SHILLONG: Governor RS Mooshahary expressed concern over the present standard of education in Shillong saying “it has taken a dip in recent years.”
Stressing on importance of reforming the education system to its earlier years during his interaction with youths of different parts of the city at Raj Bhawan on Wednesday, Mooshahary observed that this will go a long way in addressing unemployment problem.
“The education system has to change for good since unlike 50 years back, present education system has failed to address the needs of the youths of today,” he said.
“I want to see Meghalaya becoming a leading education hub in the entire region as in the past when Shillong attracted one and all from all over the region and elsewhere for academic pursuance. We need to re-build that reputation of Shillong,” he said.
He also spoke on various other social issues which need certain changes on the part of the policy-makers.
He called upon the youth to shed the mentality to work only in the State and encouraged them to avail the better opportunities that are awaiting them elsewhere. While urging them to come out of such thinking Mooshahary said, “You all should move outside and search for better opportunities. You all are no less than the youths from other states in the country and should venture out,” said Mooshahary.
When a PG student sought to know about the possibility of setting up of a National Eligibility Test (NET) Centre for science stream in the State, the Governor assured to look into the matter.
Meghalaya will observe the National Youth Day, that is, birthday of Swami Vivekananda on Thursday along with the country. The 150th birthday celebration-cum-National Youth Day will be inaugurated by Mooshahary at the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre (RKMVCC).
On Wednesday morning, a colourful procession amidst ensemble of traditional drum beat was taken out from RKMVCC to the Governor’s House.
A total of 400 children from Shillong and 600 children from Sohra have also been adopted by the Ramakhrishna Mission, Shillong and Sohra, respectively for their all round development.
