SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) on Thursday had to bear the brunt of angry passengers who failed to get bus tickets from the MTC counter at Police Bazar despite waiting for several hours due to the inadequate number of tickets.
Angry ticket seekers complained that the MTC failed to issue them tickets even though they had been waiting in the queue for several hours at a stretch.
The passengers were seeking tickets for the night bus run by the MTC to Silchar and Karimganj.
The passengers even tried to barge into the MTC office but the timely intervention by the security prevented the incident from escalating.
“I have been standing in the queue for the past 24 hours but I still did not get any ticket,” an angry ticket seeker said, later.
A lady, who failed to get tickets, said that many women were waiting for tickets since the previous evening but only a few could manage to get tickets.”
Another passenger said, “MTC is aware that every year during this time of the year there is always a rush for tickets but so far they have done nothing to increase the frequency of buses to either Silchar or Karimganj. The Government should have arranged for more buses to these destinations since such rush occurs every year.”
It may be mentioned that the there is one night bus each for Silchar and Karimganj.
This rush occurs every year ahead of the Makar Sankranti festival.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister AT Mondal, when contacted, said that he has directed the MTC officials to streamline the ticketing system immediately in view of the upcoming festival.
