Row over appointment of new head in Baghmara college

From Our Correspondent

Tura: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has demanded appointment of a new principal in Captain Williamson Memorial College of Baghmara.

The students’ body held a public meeting at Ranku Memorial Girls School in Baghmara recently to discuss this issue.

Members from several NGOs and general people attended the meeting to discuss the situation arising on the stalemate over appointment of new principal.

The GSU leader Prosper Marak told The Shillong Times that the meeting decided to issue an one-week deadline (January 12 to 19) to incumbent principal B D Sangma to step down and allow the newly-appointed principal to take charge.

One senior lecturer of Tura Government College was recently appointed as the principal of the college, but Sangma did not hand over charge to her.

The GSU has asked Sangma to withdraw case he filed against the state government in the High Court challenging the appointment of a new principal within one week’s time.

A poster campaign has started in Baghmara against Sangma for his forceful occupation of the principal’s seat.

The NGOs will send a letter to the Gauhati High Court supporting appointment of the new principal and reasons for demanding removal of the incumbent principal, who has allegedly damaged the reputation of the institute.

The GSU leader Prosper Marak has also expressed unhappiness over Meghalaya government’s failure to fulfill its promise to transfer Baghmara Deputy Commissioner as demanded by the union.
