Khyriem, Jyrwa elected KSU prez, gen secy

SHILLONG: Daniel Khyriem and Auguster Jyrwa were on Saturday elected as the president and general secretary respectively of the influential Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).

Daniel replaced three-term president Samuel B Jyrwa uncontested at an election held at Dinam Hall in the city. Similarly Frederick Kharmawphlang was elected unopposed as the vice president of the organization.

Jyrwa replaced third term general secretary Hamlet Dohling. The formal announcement of the new body will be made at the general body meeting of the KSU.

The voting for several posts including assistant general secretary, organizing secretary, education secretary, publicity secretary, office secretary commenced right from the morning till late in the evening, as members various units of the organisation could not reach the destination due to the unrelenting traffic jam.

Speaking to the media persons, the newly elected office bearers vowed to take the students’ body to greater heights and to work for the betterment of the Hynniewtrep community.

More than 4000 voters, 10 from each unit across the four districts of East and West Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi and Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.

The KSU has been demanding for a comprehensive anti-influx mechanism in the state for the past 20 years besides spearheading the anti-uranium mining campaign in Meghalaya.

Meanwhile it is learnt that outgoing general secretary of the students’ Hamlet Dohling will be contesting the 2013 Assembly elections from Mylliem constituency.

While there are speculations that the outgoing president, Samuel Jyrwa too might launch his political career, Jyrwa has denied that he has any such intentions. “We are stepping aside to allow new leadership to take over the Union. We have contributed our share towards building the organisation and feel we should now allow others to take over and provide new leadership.”
