The capital city of Shillong literally turns

into darkness as the sun sets and the evening hours set in in the absence of proper street lighting.

Unlike other capital cities like Guwahati where thousands of street lights power almost every nook and corner of the city, in Shillong the case is the opposite. Many streets and main roads in the city remain under cover of darkness and people are mostly found to avoid these areas in the night hours.

A tourist, hailing from Dibrugarh, Assam said, “Shillong is a capital city and it seems that no street lights function here in the evening whereas in Guwahati hundreds of powerful lights glow all throughout night.”

Recently, few street lights were put up in different parts of the city but these street lights function in a disorderly manner.

Only Police Bazar and its adjoining areas have been bathed in powerful street lights whereas in other areas there are very few lights.

Residents of Shillong say that if street lights are installed over the city, it would also help in doing away with thefts, robberies and many more serious crimes. (By Aafaque Hussain)
