From Our Corresspondent
NONGSTOIN: Nongpyndeng village which is known as the centre of education in West Khasi Hills and has also claimed the title of being a “model village” of the district has been hit hard by pathetic condition of the road in the area even as the scheme for implementation of the road project was sanctioned as early as 2007.
The deplorable condition of the road in the village has created a lot of problems for the people of the area, specially the students who travel from around the district to attend their schools and colleges here.
The Village authority has sent many reminder letters to the PWD Minister and the Chief Engineer, PWD Shillong but there has been no response till date. Almost five years since the scheme for the road project was sanctioned, the area has not seen any repairing or other maintenance work of late.
Adding to the menace of bad road condition in the area, improper drainage system has made things worse as dirt and mud overflow onto the roads causing air and water pollution in the neighbourhood.
Nongpyndeng is home to many schools and colleges which includes the Nongstoin College, Nongstoin, Sibsing Memorial Government Higher Secondary School , Jawaharlal Novodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), District Institute for Education and Training (DIET) to name a few. Hence, given the academic significance of the village, lack of initiatives to improve things in the vicinity could make matters worse for the entire district.
Speaking to The Shillong Times a college student and local inhabitant said that people have to bear great inconvenience on account of the bad road. “During winters it’s dusty while in summer the road is muddy and there is no other way or footpath which we could use as an alternative path.”
The village secretary of Nongpyndeng, T.W.Syiem has urged the PWD to act on the matter in order to relieve the school children and the general public of the hardship.
