SHILLONG: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has justified its decision to hold the election at the block level to select candidates for the next Assembly elections slated for 2013.
Reacting to a newsitem ‘BCC elections throw Congress out of gear’ (ST, January 16), the acting president of MPCC Deborah C Marak said the decision to hold the election was only an intra-party exercise aimed at finding out candidates who have better winning prospects.
“This in fact ensures quality contest among the ticket aspirants,” MPCC acting president said in a statement.
Following this initial exercise, she said that the selection of the party candidates is subjected to normal process of scrutiny which also includes scrutiny by the State Election Committee (SEC) of the PCC.
Marak said, “After the scrutiny of the PCC, the same list would be forwarded to the AICC president for final approval”.
The PCC decision to hold election at block level has not created any confusion among the party workers, the statement said.
