Malda (West Bengal): With the death of four more infants on Friday at Malda Hospital and Medical College, altogether 17 babies died in the last three days.

Brushing aside the allegation that the deaths took place due to negligence on the part of the hospital authority, CMOH, S Jhariyat claimed that most of the deaths resulted from malnutrition or cold and flu and added some of the babies were brought in dying condition.

Meanwhile, DM, Dr Ms Archana informed that all the public health centers here would be provided with an incubator each to fight cot casualty.

Referring to the announcement, Dr Jhariyat said only one incubator would not suffice the purpose.

Incidentally, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday refuted the charge of negligence behind the cause of the serial deaths of infants in Government hospitals and blamed it on ‘poor infrastructure’, created by the previous Left Front Government.

” The problem lies elsewhere. The state lacked proper medical infrastructure because of the previous Government’s neglect with 40,000 children dying every year, ” she said. (UNI)
