HYDERABAD: The Telangana Political Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Saturday decided to intensify the agitation for a separate statehood from April and announced a series of programmes till March end in support of its demand.

Briefing newsmen here after a two day meeting of the steering committee of the JAC, Committee Chairman M Kodandaram criticised the Centre for allegedly supporting leaders of Coastal and Rayalseema regions on the statehood issue and alleged the UPA Government had ”betrayed” the Telangana people.

He said the 42-day ”Sakalu Janula Samme” (general strike) held in September and October last year had awakened the Telangana people who have come forward to realise their aspirations of separate state but the Seemaandhra leaders had emerged a stumbling block to their desire and this led to the Centre in not ”honouring” the promise it made to the people of the Telangana region. He also castigataed the state government for failing to fulfill the assurances it had given to the Telangana Government Employees befoire they ended their general strike.

The State Government had deliberately harassed the striking employees to ”suppress” the agitation, he alleged and said the Kiran Kumar Reddy Government had registered cases on the youth, students and Telangana protogonists for participating in the Telangana agitation ”peacefully”.

The JAC steering Committee had decided to target the Seemaandhra leaders and the parties in Telangana for not supporting the statehood issue. (UNI)
