AGARTALA: The release of Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) head constable Lutfur Rahaman who allegedly killed an innocent villager in Tarapukur area under Sonamura sub-division in western border of Tripura, has created resentment among locals as well as in the state police.

According to report, Border Security Force (BSF), Tripura Frontier had handed over the accused BGB jawan to its Bangladeshi counterpart through Akhaura check-post in Agartala in the wee hours on Saturday following instruction of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Lutfur Rahaman was caught by villagers when 33 battalion BGB personnel led by him shot dead 40-year-old Saha Alam inside Indian Territory and tried to drag the body away to Bangladesh.

BSF had rescued Lutfur from the villagers on January 20.

However, within an hour after Lutfur was caught by the villagers.

Border Guard of Bangladesh (BGB) personnel had allegedly taken hostage of seven Indian farmers who went outside the wire fencing for cultivation.

Later at night, BGB had released the farmers after by a flag meeting between the BGB and BSF in the area.

Incidentally, police was denied the custody of the accused BGB jawan and as a result, he could not be produced before any court.

“We have not registered any case against Lutfur Rahaman,” said a senior police official who did not want to be named.

He added that keeping in mind the Indo-Bangladesh relations Indian authorities did not want to complicate the issue.

However he said that if police was consulted it would had been better.

Meanwhile, BSF sources said here BSF Director General U K Bansal was assured by his counterpart of BGB Major General Anwar Hussein in this regard that Rahaman would be punished as per the law of Bangladesh.

It was also assured that during trial Indian witnesses and statement would be taken into account.

It was established that the rebel faction of Bangladeshi Army was involved in misguiding BGB personnel for creating tension in Indian village following their foiled bid to revolt against Sheikh Hasina government last week, BSF officials said.

BSF has also asserted that the victim family would be getting compensation as per the norms and there should not be any point of disagreement with the decision of the highest authority.

BSF expected the villagers to be united and help BSF tackle illegal trade along the border. (UNI)
