Three Cong supporters shot at, bomb attacks continue

Imphal: Three supporters of state Congress president Gaikhangam were shot at by suspected Naga militants at Tamenglong district on Tuesday and bomb attacks on Congress candidates and workers continued unabated as Manipur goes to polls on January 28.

Police said some armed persons came to Noney in Tamenglong district where a poll campaign for the Congress president was going on. They started firing in which three persons were injured. All the injured have been rushed to RIMS and are undergoing treatment. They are stated to be out of danger.

Meanwhile, three bombs were found in as many houses of supporters of Ph Parijat, a minister who is contesting as a CPI candidate at Lamlai Assembly constituency. All the bombs were later removed by bomb experts.

Meanwhile a bomb exploded on Monday night at Kakching near the residence of a Congress worker. In another incident a Congress worker was fired at Lamding. However, he managed to escape unhurt. The residence of Andro Congress candidate Th Shyamkumar was also attacked by gunmen. A bomb was found by police on Tuesday at Khuyathong near the residence of a Congress worker.

The Coordinating Committee of seven militant outfits had put a ban on the Congress party and had launched series of attacks on Congress candidates and workers. A man was killed in an attack near the residence of Speaker I Hemochandra on Saturday night. (UNI)
